Job Shadowing

Job Shadowing

17/11/11

Today I was doing job shadowing with one of the IT Technicians in the East campus from 9:15 to 10:45.  The first thing we done was we had to go to one of the rooms on the first floor because the students were unable to print their work out.  When we arrived and spoke to the teacher we found out that the room they were in did not have a printer connected up because they were all using wireless laptops, but the teacher has a laptop that IT support had connected to the main printer in the staff room, so the teacher said that the students could send all their work to her email address and she could print it out through her computer, so that was that problem solved.

Then when we had finished one of the hairdressers had a problem using mail merge and needed help with it, so we went into her office and showed her how to use the mail merge, but she had all her information saved in a database which for some reason was not able to be accessed through publisher for the mail merge, so she had to transfer it to excel and put it into a spreadsheet that way when she saves it, she is able to access it and create her mail merge.

I was also shown the server room/stock room and was shown all the different servers that were used for the backup of the H drives for the students and the teacher and the main office in the West campus, I was also shown the different lights and what they meant, the green lights meant that everything was working okay as it should be and the red light meant that there was a problem with one of the servers and an engineer had to come out and fix it.  I was also show the different printers, toner, ink etc that they had in the stock room and the consumables and how they were shipped out to other classrooms etc.

I was then showed the helpdesk where the staff send requests to the IT support office to ask them to help with problems they are having they may be having.  It also shows how the staffs are logged on etc.

After that I was shown the server software that enable IT support to remotely turn on different computers and fix the software problems they may be having with them or upgrade the software, from this they are also able to view the different machines and see what the students are accessing and if they are not doing their work and are on games etc the IT support is then able to log them off the computer which stops them from accessing the internet and also stops them from doing their work.  This is a short summary of what I learnt today in my job shadowing and it shows that I had a lot of fun.
